Corona del Mar Certified Farmers’ Market, open every Saturday from 9 a.m. -1 p.m., rain or shine. Marguerite Avenue at Pacific Coast Highway. Comprises 27 local farmers who offer fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as flowers, pastas and fish.

Lido Marina Village Farmers’ Market, open every Wednesday from 12-5 p.m. 3434 Via Lido. Spend the afternoon sampling and shopping for fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheeses, juice, bread and more. One hour of complimentary parking in the structure. 

Newport Beach Farmers’ Market by Farmer Mark, open every Sunday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Located at 104 McFadden Place, right next to Newport Pier. Offers veggies, fruits, flowers, honey, fresh breads, local farm fresh meats and handcrafted items from local artisans. Choose from a variety of free range quail, duck, chicken and goose eggs. On the fourth Sunday of each month, the Farmers’ Market teams up with the Newport Beach Surfrider Foundation Chapter to host a beach clean up. To show their appreciation, they give the first 30 participants a Farmers’ Market Buck to spend with any of their vendors. The next beach clean up is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 22 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, SEMINARS and more

SAVE THE DATE: Sherman Library & Gardens presents the 2020 Newport Beach Garden Tour. The annual tour showcases six residential gardens each year. Selected home garden owners allow the public to wander through their yard from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. Homeowners do not need to be home for the tour, as Sherman Library & Gardens provides staff at each location. The Tour, in its 24th year, is Sherman Library & Garden’s largest fundraiser of the year and is an event for the avid and amateur gardener alike. www.thesherman.org

Mini Camellia Bonsai on Thursday, February 26 from 9-11 a.m. Create an adorable mini flowering bonsai with a rare camellia from the famous Nuccio’s Nursery. You will learn the basics of bonsai and how to care for your tiny flowering tree. Cost: Members, $65; Non-member, $75. Tomatomania! on Saturday, February 28 through Sunday, March 8. “The world’s largest (and most fun) tomato plant sale” comes to Roger’s Gardens for the eighth year. Scott Daigre and his staff of Tomatomaniacs offer an astonishing selection of more than 200 varieties of heirloom and hybrid tomato plants, including new varieties for 2020 and a large selection of peppers. They also will be introducing the Tomato of the Year, “Thorburn’s Terracotta,” With a honey-brown, almost pure terra-cotta color skin, orange-pink flesh, and bright green seed clusters, it’s magical to look at and has an incredible flavor. Immerse yourself in seminars that will leave you wanting to learn more about these special plants. Experts will answer any questions to ensure a successful tomato season. Happy Tomato Hunting.

Homegrown Tomatoes on Saturday, February 29 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. If there is just one edible plant to grow at home, it is the tomato. Nowhere else is the contrast in flavor, nutrition and variety between “home-grown” and “store-bought” more evident. This how-to class for all levels of gardeners will provide all the practical knowledge necessary to begin growing tomatoes today. Learn which varieties to grow, how to plant and care for tomatoes, and common diseases and pests that afflict them. The speaker, Dave Freed, featured in the Los Angeles Times and with more than 50,000 visits to his blog site in less than three years, researches, educates and helps other backyard farmers successfully grow the ever popular home-grown tomato. Every year, Freed grows a variety of hybrids, heirlooms, cherry and beefsteak tomatoes in both containers and regular backyard soil. He always has plenty of tomatoes and is happy to share his tips on how to grow tomatoes easily. Cost: $10 which covers the materials and/or handouts. Registration deadline is February 28. Spring Orchid Garden Workshop with Shelley Burton on Saturday, March 14 from 10-11 a.m. Join Garden Rooms Team Leader, Shelley Burton, as she demonstrates how to combine the ever-popular succulents with an orchid plant, in a white glazed container. She will also provide you with tips on how to care for your planted container. Workshop fee is $100 per person, includes a white colored container approximately 10 inches in diameter, various succulents, one pink orchid and step-by-step instruction. Space is limited. Unfortunately, due to material costs, cancellations after Friday, March 6 cannot be refunded.

Food Preservation: Lemon Curd, English Scones and the Mystery of UBE on Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. This class will bring you up to date on the latest recommendations, teach you how to process your food safely and tell you why you are doing it that way. You will learn what equipment is needed and proper storage methods. In addition, you will discover ways to save money and prolong the life of your fruits and vegetables, all while reducing food waste and eating healthier without additives. The speaker, Pamela Wnuck, is a University of California Cooperative Extension Master Food Preserver of Orange County and the OC Fair Culinary Arts Supervisor. A multi-blue ribbon winner, she will share her passion for cooking with fresh garden ingredients and priceless tips on preserving the harvest. Cost: $25 which covers ingredients and handouts. Bring two half-pint Ball or Kerr canning jars with lids and rings, along with an apron. Knives will be provided, but you can bring your own if preferred. How to Grow and Use Medicinal Herbs of the Southern California Garden on Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Here in Southern California, we are able to grow a wide range of culinary and medicinal plants in our gardens year round. They are beautiful, aromatic and tasty, but beyond that, some of our most common garden herbs can be used for supporting healing in many ways too. In this class, you’ll learn all about these herbs from clinical herbalist and Master Gardener Julie James. Taste and explore some of the common ways to transform your garden bounty into infused oils, balms, tinctures, glycerites, vinegar extracts, powders and more. Turn your garden into a home apothecary. You’ll take home extensive notes and recipes, and samples of various products you can make. Cost: $30 which covers the materials and/or handouts. Registration deadline is March 19. Hanging Succulent Orb Workshop with Onita Castillo, on Saturday, March 24 from 5-6 p.m. This modern twist on hanging baskets will turn heads. Original Designs Team Leader, Onita Castillo, will demonstrate how to create a hanging succulent orb. She will share how different varieties of succulents grow and fill in your orb over time. The workshop fee is $100 per person, which includes a 12-inch iron frame, sphere filled with moss, succulents and step-by-step instructions. Space is limited. Nature Gardening – Behind the Scenes at Sherman Gardens with Ron Vanderhoff on Saturday, March 28 from 9-10 a.m. Join Rogers Gardens’ General Manager Ron Vanderhoff and Erin Aguiar, horticulture manager at Sherman Library & Gardens for this special walk-and-talk tour of Sherman Library & Gardens to learn about what it takes to sustain such incredible plants and garden displays. Most important, they will discuss some of their commitments to ecological horticulture in Orange County. Aguiar and the horticulture team at Sherman Gardens are leaders in encouraging plants and gardening practices that support habitats and biodiversity, as well as gardens that conserve our natural resources. They will meet at Sherman Library & Gardens, in the rear parking lot promptly at 9 a.m. for the complimentary admission and presentation. Horticultural Therapy and the Benefits of Indoor Plants on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Look into our biophilic connection with nature, find out why indoor plants are important in our everyday lives, and learn how we can make our lives greener. Class participants will learn how to use plants and gardening to improve mental and physical health, and will transplant an indoor plant to take home. This course qualifies for Continuing Education Units (CEUs), which are evaluated in accordance with strict U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Building Owners & Managers Institute (BOMI) guidelines. Lauri Kranz, Edible Gardens LA on Friday, April 10 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. as part of the Lunch & Lecture Series. Kranz is the founder of Edible Gardens LA, which builds, plants and maintains organic gardens across Los Angeles. Kranz fell in love with gardening when her son’s school needed volunteers and gardening was on the list. Now there isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t have her hands in the soil and she’s never been happier. Her client list has grown to include celebrities as well as top restaurants, museums and anyone interested in growing their own food. She will share her wisdom and her new book, A Garden Can Be Anywhere: Creating Bountiful and Beautiful Edible Gardens. Enjoy a speaker presentation and delicious lunch.
