Don’t miss a rare opportunity to attend a holiday event at the American Legion-Squadron 291, which is typically open to “members only.” In the spirit of the holidays, come join the Sons of the American Legion on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and Thursday, Dec. 19, when the best seats for viewing the 111th annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade are made available.
There will be more than 200 boats, yachts and other watercraft passing by, artfully decorated. Many will have cheerful holiday music with carolers on-board, and boaters will be waving to the crowds on shore, wishing all a happy holiday. It is truly an evening of fun for the entire family.
Viewing takes place on the patio of the American Legion, with proceeds benefiting the Sons of the American Legion’s programs helping our local troops, veterans and their families throughout the year.
Come join the festivities with a Mexican Christmas Fiesta theme, complete with mariachis, a visit from Santa, face painting for the kids and a caricature cartoonist. A catered dinner buffet by Taco Revolution includes chicken noodle soup, chile rojo, grilled chicken, vegetable fajitas, rice & beans, corn & flour tortillas, brownies, aqua fresca (fruit-flavored water), tea, coffee and cocoa.

Costa Mesa United to host OC All-Star Classic
The 61st Annual Orange County North-South All-Star Classic football game will be played in its eighth decade on January 25, 2020 at Orange Coast College (OCC).
The game, featuring high school senior standouts in Orange County and managed by Costa Mesa United, started in 1959 and is one of the few entities and organizations in Orange County that encompasses the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, ought years, teen years and now the 2020s.
Costa Mesa United now supports Newport Harbor High and Ensign Intermediate School.
“The Orange County All-Star football game is a community treasure,” Costa Mesa United President Gordon Bowley said. “We are honored and privileged to uphold the standard of managing the all-star game the way the Brea Lions Club did for so many years.”
In 2017, Costa Mesa United saved the all-star game at the last minute, when the Orange County Register reported that the Brea Lions Club was not going to host the game, “for a couple reasons,” Costa Mesa United board member Ron Amburgey said.
In 2018, Costa Mesa United switched the game from July to January and added the Los Angeles Chargers as a presenting sponsor. The 2020 All-Star Classic will be the third straight year in which the game is played in January.
In the late 1950s, and with highly successful former Brea-Olinda High football coach Dick Tucker a member of the Brea Lions Club, the organization started the county all-star game in 1959 and named Tucker as the first North coach.
The late Tucker once said that the game was launched based on the fact that many Orange County football coaches were not pleased because too few county players were picked for the 1958 Shrine High School All-Star Game in Los Angeles, and the coaches helped start their own seniors-only high school all-star game.
After a sparkling coaching career at Brea-Olinda, Tucker arrived at Orange Coast in 1962 and guided the Pirates to national championships in 1963 and 1975. The field at OCC is named after Tucker.

Sherman Library & Gardens seeks nominations for 2020 Newport Beach Garden Tour
Sherman Library & Gardens is in the planning stages for the 2020 Newport Beach Garden Tour. The annual tour will showcase gardens in the Newport Beach area. The Garden Tour committee of dedicated volunteers is seeking recommendations for private, residential gardens in this area now through January 31, 2020.
The Newport Beach Garden Tour showcases six residential gardens each year. Selected home garden owners will allow members of the community to wander through their yard from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2020. Homeowners do not need to be home for the tour, as Sherman Library & Gardens provides staff at each location. The Tour, in its 24th year, is Sherman Library & Garden’s largest fundraiser of the year and is an event for the avid and amateur gardener alike.

To nominate a garden, please provide the physical street address, along with the owner’s name, contact information and a photo or two if possible to info@slgardens.org, or call 949.673.2261, ext. 300. The annual fundraiser takes place on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
