Hoag Breast Center named Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence

Hoag Breast Center is the first and only breast center in Orange County to be named a Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence – the highest level of accreditation – by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program™

(NQMBC™). Recognized for the sixth consecutive year, Hoag Breast Center is just one of 57 facilities in the U.S. to receive this designation.

“We are proud of this prestigious designation and consider it to be both a tribute to the high quality care we deliver, as well as a mandate to continue to strive for excellence on behalf of our patients,” said January Lopez, M.D., director of Breast Imaging for Hoag Breast Centers.

The NQMBC measures a breast center’s performance on select indicators such as timeliness of care for screening and diagnostic mammography, mammography call back rate, patient satisfaction, surgical care, pathology and radiation.

Hoag Breast Centers, in both Newport Beach and Irvine, offer comprehensive breast care services from prevention and screening to diagnostics and treatment.

Thanks to a gift from Circle 1000, Hoag was one of the first facilities in the state to offer Breast Tomosynthesis (3D Mammography) and is dedicated to providing patients access to emerging technologies to help diagnose breast cancer at its earliest stage. Donor support from the community also allowed Hoag to be one of the first hospitals in California to have a dedicated breast MRI unit.

Additionally, under the leadership of Melvin Silverstein, M.D., Gross Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery and medical director of Hoag Breast Center, Hoag has the largest database of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) clinical trials with more than 1,150 patients, the most cases for a single site in the U.S.

“IORT offers our patients a clinically effective, faster and easier alternative to whole breast radiation therapy,” Dr. Silverstein said. “We are able to reduce treatment to 30 minutes versus 30 days which means less repeat visits and physical discomfort, less emotional stress and the opportunity to immediately return to your daily life and routine.”
