Eighty-year-old Newport Beach resident killed on a Sunday bike ride by suspected DUI driver

Eighty-year-old Newport Beach resident Ernest Adams was killed Sunday, March 28, while riding his bicycle near Newport Harbor High School by a suspected drunk driver. The incident occurred at approximately 3:16 p.m. in the area of 16th Street and Irvine Avenue. Adams’ death was confirmed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office.

According to the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD), who received the initial call for the incident, Adams was struck and then transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to major injuries.

Multiple eyewitnesses reported that the suspect apparently ran a stop sign prior to hitting Adams.

The suspect did stop following the incident and was then put through a field sobriety check by the NBPD. After failing the test, Alexis Garcialopez, 20, of Norwalk, was arrested on suspicion of DUI by alcohol causing serious bodily injury.

Drive a loud or modified exhaust vehicle or race throughout the city limits and you face consequences of NBPD enforcement

The Newport Beach Police Department has received numerous complaints over the last few months regarding loud vehicles with modified exhaust as well as racing vehicles traveling throughout the city.

Many of these types of vehicles are thought to gather at non-permitted car shows and other locations within city limits. These vehicles pose a safety risk and affect the quality of life of residents and visitors to Newport Beach. As a result, the NBPD has stepped up their traffic enforcement and launched a Loud/Modified Vehicle Exhaust and Street Racing Enforcement Operations through summer.

The NBPD has taken steps to educate the public on vehicle exhaust laws and ongoing enforcement efforts by placing several electronic signboards with messaging in high traffic areas within the city.

The NBPD Traffic Division has also done outreach to the various non-permitted car shows and other locations to educate vehicle owners on the California Vehicle Code and Newport Beach Municipal Code as it relates to loud/modified exhaust and street racing.

Over the last several months, the NBPD has increased enforcement of violations related to vehicles with loud/modified exhaust and street racing using direct deployments of Newport Beach Police Officers.

This past weekend, on Sunday, March 28, the NBPD conducted a joint operation utilizing NBPD Patrol and Motor Officers, Newport Beach Code Enforcement, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Because of this successful joint operation, 136 vehicles were stopped for violations, 102 were cited for vehicle code violations (which includes loud/modified exhaust), 17 were inspected on-site for modified exhaust violations by a BAR Referee, 2 vehicles were referred to on-site DMV Investigators for possible registration violations, 5 vehicles were cited for exceeding 100 MPH, 1 vehicle was cited for driving 130 MPH, and 1 vehicle was stopped and the driver arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle.

The Newport Beach Police Department thanked the various allied law enforcement and state agency partners for their assistance with this operation.

Editor’s Note: An arrest contains allegations that a suspect has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
