On Tuesday evening, June 27, at the meeting of the Board of Education of the Newport Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD), Diane and Scott Daruty presented Spirit Run’s annual donation to NMUSD. The Darutys are members of the Board of Directors of Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit corporation founded in 2010 to continue the annual Spirit Run, and to donate its net proceeds to benefit education and athletics in NMUSD.

In addition to cash, NMSRI provides other value to NMUSD. Since 2011, with assistance from members of the University of California, Irvine Track Team, NMSRI has conducted free training to prepare students for Spirit Run at several NMUSD elementary schools. Additionally, free entries and bus transportation have been provided to underprivileged NMUSD students.

Diane Daruty briefly addressed the Board of Education regarding the achievements of the 34th Annual Newport-Mesa Spirit Run held March 12 at Fashion Island. Highlights included the growth in the Youth 5k, the excitement of the new Dog and Elite Mile Races, and the event’s financial success.

For the 2017 event, NMSRI donated more than $41,000 to participating NMUSD schools and high school clubs and teams. Since its inception in 2010, NMSRI has donated more than $335,000 to NMUSD.

NMSRI would not be possible without the continued support of its dedicated Board of Directors. Current NMSRI Board Members include Diane Daruty, Scott Daruty, Raylene Groves, Dave Kobrine and Patricia Kohler.
