Five reasons to be a part of the Spirit Run – A Race for the Schools
The 34th Annual Spirit Run is coming to Fashion Island on Sunday, March 12. To gear up for this eventful morning with races and walks appealing to every age and ability level, here are some important reasons to participate in this great day that benefits our schools.
1. Support Fundraiser for Youth Education and Athletics in NMUSD
Spirit Run benefited five Newport Beach elementary schools in the CDM area. In 2010, the PTAs who presented Spirit Run decided they no longer wanted to do so. A new nonprofit, Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI), was founded to continue this event. NMSRI invites any NMUSD school to participate in the event and share its net proceeds.

2. Not just for NMUSD schools – Helps NMUSD high school clubs and teams fundraise and meet private school friends and families participating in the new “Dash For Cash.”
3. Supports Youth Fitness for All Children
Beginning with the 2011 event, the foundation has been conducting free running training programs at NMUSD elementary schools to prepare for Spirit Run. It works with UCI Cross Country and Track Team members to train students, offers free entries to underprivileged NMUSD students and makes available free bus transportation for students and families so they can get to the event.
4. Supports Local Community
Top ranking (3rd or 4th) by City of Newport Beach in grant applications since inception. Only the Christmas Boat Parade and Newport Beach Film Festival have consistently ranked higher.
5. Attracts an Elite Field of Runners
For the fifth consecutive year, So Cal USATF has selected Spirit Run as one of 11 or 12 events from Southern and Central California to be included in its Grand Prix Road Championship Series. This series offers opportunities for USA Track & Field adult and youth members to compete in some of the best road races and fastest courses in So Cal USATF’s region. Elites include: Steve Scott, Julie Swail, Annie St. Geme, Strava Track Club and Cal Coast Track Club.
